Centre approval fees in the UK are the charges that an awarding organisation applies when a training centre applies to deliver a regulated qualifications. The main use of these fees is to cover the cost of reviewing the centre’s application, assessing their delivery capability, and carrying out the quality assurance processes needed to approve the qualification for delivery.

In this article, you will find out how qualification approval fees work at Focus Awards, what the centre approval process involves, how registration fees are structured for learners, and what to do if you have a query about charges or invoices.

What Are Centre Approval Fees?

What Are Centre Approval Fees?

When a training provider or organisation wants to deliver a regulated qualifications in the UK, they must first be approved by an awarding organisation — such as Focus Awards. This approval process involves reviewing the centre’s policies, assessment practices, staff qualifications, and delivery resources to make sure they meet the required quality standards.

Centre approval fees cover the cost of this review. They are typically non-refundable, as the fee reflects the time and resource involved in assessing the application. In addition to centre approval fees, awarding organisations also charge registration fees when a learner is enrolled onto a qualification, and in some cases, certificate claim fees when the qualification is completed.

Understanding these costs upfront is important for training providers when planning their delivery budgets, setting course fees for learners, and managing the financial side of their qualification offer. Types of Fees Charged by Focus Awards

At Focus Awards, fees fall into several clear categories. Here is a breakdown of the main charges that centres should be aware of:

Centre Approval Fee

This is the fee charged when an organisation first applies to become a Focus Awards-approved centre. It covers the cost of reviewing the application, assessing policies and procedures, and setting up the centre on the Qualitas system. This is a one-off fee paid at the point of application.

Learner Registration Fee

When a learner is enrolled on a Focus Awards qualification, a registration fee is charged. This fee registers the learner on the Qualitas system, assigns them to the correct qualification, and starts the clock on their registration period. Registration fees vary depending on the qualification level and size.

External Quality Assurance (EQA) Fee

Focus Awards allocates an External Quality Assurer to every approved centre. EQA visits — whether remote or in person — are part of the ongoing quality assurance process. Fees may apply for EQA activity depending on the level of monitoring required.

Keeping Up to Date with Fee Changes

Approval fees can change from year to year. Focus Awards publishes fee updates in advance — typically ahead of the new academic year on 1 August — so that centres have enough time to plan their budgets accordingly. It is important for centres to check for fee updates regularly and to notify their management team of any changes that affect their delivery costs.

Focus Awards also updates qualification specifications and approval requirements in line with regulatory changes from Ofqual and the Department for Education. Centres are notified of any significant updates through the Qualitas platform and by direct communication from their allocated EQA.
